The journey began with my first business plan I wrote for an entertainment center in my home town. Though this business never took off,  it allowed me to see depth about becoming a business owner...
The first business I actually started was an organization store, where I both organized people’s homes, garages, and offices in addition to selling them all things to organize.  This business allowed me a peak into the merchant services industry as I utilized those services...
I was caught up into the “rates as low as 1.99%” as many of you know all to well about. I soon realized, because of my business type, I was actually paying a rate of 4.99%, in addition to all the monthly fees and equipment lease!..
Yes, I fear the vast majority of business owners have fallen into this trap at least once. The sad thing was that I actually thought I was getting a deal and referred my friends and colleagues to these services!..
It was on one of these referral calls to my provider that I was introduced to the option of selling merchant services for my, then, utilized company...
Considering the amount of referrals I was giving, I knew I could make money selling their services...
Thus it began...
In addition to my organization store, I started selling merchant services. I quickly became their #1 salesperson in the northwest. All this with little understanding of how the system worked...
I will tell you, I would never sell a lease to a business owner, knowing that they would pay upwards of 12 times the actual cost for their equipment. Though I was pressured many times to sell leased equipment, being advised, “you can make good money selling leases...” I just could not stomach hurting a small business owner with those costs...
Soon I found myself being approached by other merchant services companies to sell their products (which do not differ from any other providers). Somehow they found out that I was a great salesperson and they desired to pick me up...
Many offers came, of which I was given an offer I was interested in with what again, looked like a good company to work for...
This company provided me with even a greater look on how the business was ran from the inside out. I learned how pricing worked, and where the best amount of profit came from, in addition to what to assess the business to obtain that profit for myself...
Again, I found myself looking after the business owner and wanted them to succeed. I sacrificed a lot of money to help the small business owner keep their money...
This allowed me more customers as these business owners saw me as a person who was willing to help them and their friends...
I soon decided, I too, wanted to own a retail store that could help fill a void in my community and so I bought a business within my hometown.
As I expected, I saw the costs of merchant services as one of my largest monthly expenses. Some months it was the highest expense, with the exception to payroll. This was concerning considering I asked for the best rate possible as I sold their services!..
I soon understood why many of my colleagues were failing...
Three years after working for this second company and owning the hometown business, I found a way that I could have a merchant services company of my own...
I became a company just like the ones I had worked for. With one major difference, I was not in it to become a billionaire!..
